Out of the 15,000+ classic motocross bikes we’ve restored and sold, this is the nicest RM400 we’ve ever had through the shop. This machine has just undergone a full frame-off restoration and stands as one of the best surviving examples of the 1979 RM400. This RM400 started as a low-hour original and was stripped down to the bare frame for a complete rebuild. Every part was either replaced, refinished, or restored to factory specs: Frame & Chassis: Frame rails pristine, automotive-quality sandblast and repaint. New swingarm bearings. Original footpegs, brake lever, shifter, and kicker all intact and straight. Engine: Complete rebuild with new piston, Fresh bore, New rings & Top End bearing, base & head gaskets. New Mikuni carburetor and new air filter. Original exhaust restored with period-correct aluminum silencer. The Cases, cylinder, and covers are repainted. Runs beautifully and is jetted perfectly. Suspension: Amazingly retains its original shocks—still in great functional condition (rare!). Forks rebuilt and refinished with air-assisted forward axle design. Wheels & Tires: Original DID rims in mint condition. New Michelin Starcross tires with new tubes, rim strips, and New gold chain and Black Sprocket. Bodywork & Controls: Brand new fuel tank, new graphics, new side number plates, New fenders, New clutch perch, levers & grips, and New front number plate. Original bars straight and true. Original cases, pegs, kicker, and sprocket guard all in excellent condition. Swingarm and frame rails as clean as the top of the bike. All aluminum, steel, and hardware either polished, repainted, or preserved. Period-correct finishes throughout—ready for museum display or AHRMA racing. This RM400 is as good as it gets—show-quality with Race Ready functional reliability. A proper frame-off restoration like this requires 80+ hours of shop labor plus thousands in new parts. At today’s shop rates and parts prices, a project of this scale would easily cost $12,000–$14,000. Here, the work has already been done to the highest standard on a perfect original RM400. The RM400 was Suzuki’s open-class big bore contender in the golden age of motocross. Production numbers were limited, and most were raced into the ground decades ago. Very few survived in restorable condition, making examples like this exceptionally rare. This bike represents a key moment in motocross history when air-cooled two-stroke technology was peaking, and each model year brought rapid improvements. Collectors and racers alike consider the ’79 RM400 one of Suzuki’s finest open-classers. Currently on display at the New England Motorcycle Museum (3rd floor) until sold. Buyers are welcome to see it in person. We can assist with worldwide shipping. 📞 Call us at 860-454-7024 with any questions. This is an investment quality example. Kaplan America approved!
