1961 Matchless G12 CSR
Up for sale is my 1961 Matchless G12 CSR (650cc twin), which I bought nearly 3 years ago from Kettering Classics, having only had 2 previous owners in the last 60 years! Indeed I was informed that it was used regularly up until it was ridden over to Kettering Classics for sale by the then owner.
Since purchase I have slowly been through the bike recommissioning and refurbishing elements as I go, but wherever possible I have kept the original parts where they were in good condition. So this is has not been a restoration, but more a tidy up and refresh of what was already a good bike and keeping the bike largely in unrestored condition. The end result is a very presentable machine.
Works undertaken include:
· Top end rebuild with new piston rings & gaskets (bores/pistons currently on +40 thou and all good).
· Barrels repainted.
· New semi-western handlebars (i.e. as per the export models) with all new controls (Doherty style levers) including new period looking switchgear for indicators, lights and horn. I still have the original bars and control levers etc. I also have bar end mirrors (not currently fitted) that will come with the bike.
· All new control cables throughout.
· Indicators fitted (classic style from Paul Goff).
· Wiring tidied up with new connectors.
· New solid state Regulator/Rectifier (from Paul Goff).
· New Motobatt battery (MB5.5U – 7.0AH)
· New Rob Swift easi-lift centre stand fitted.
· Clutch overhauled with new clutch plates and rubbers.
· New gauze & felt oil filter.
· New front brake shoes.
· Carburettor overhauled (new jets & gaskets).
· New ethanol resistant fuel lines with glass fuel filter.
· Recovered seat with new gel padding on the original base carried out by Nostalgia Upholstery (I still have the original cover).
· New megaphone style silencer (again I have kept the original silencer, which will come with the bike).
· New foot rest and other rubbers.
· New front mudguard fixings and stays repainted.
The bike has 12V electrics with alternator and magneto ignition. It also benefits from alloy rims front & rear (Morad & Borrani). The tank is all original paint and as such has a few chips on the top from use. The mileage on the speedo currently reads 48,881.
So if you are after a largely original and unrestored but very presentable Matchless G12 CRS then this one is worth a look. Only been ridden a couple of times since finishing it, so still needs fine tuning.
The bike will come with a lot of the original bits (e.g. handlebars, controls, silencer etc) plus other bits such as a full engine gaskets set, primary chain case gasket etc.
The reason for sale is because I am not getting the use out of it I expected and have decided that a classic car is probably better for us than a classic bike.
