Anthony Gobert, nicknamed “The Go Show,” was a talented motorcycle racer whose career was marked by both meteoric achievements and personal struggles. I was a great fan of Anthony based on his amazing racing during the World Superbike Series, with a very special win on the Bimota at Philip Island in 2000.
Early Years (1975-1994):
- Born in Australia in 1975, Anthony Gobert began his racing career in motocross, winning national titles.
- He transitioned to road racing in his teens and dominated the Australian Superbike Championship in 1994.
World Superbike Stardom (1994-1995):
- In 1994, Gobert burst onto the international scene as a wildcard entry at the World Superbike Championship in Phillip Island, Australia.
- He stunned everyone by taking pole position and winning the race, becoming the youngest ever World Superbike race winner at 19 years old (a record that stood for two years).
- This victory catapulted him into a full-time ride with Muzzy Kawasaki in 1995. He finished 4th in the championship, winning races in Laguna Seca and Phillip Island.
Challenges and Decline (1996-2006):
- Unfortunately, Gobert’s career began to derail due to personal struggles with drug addiction.
- He continued to compete for several years, but his results were inconsistent and his potential remained largely unfulfilled.
- He raced with various teams and in different championships, including Superbike World, British Superbike, and Supersport World.
- He retired from professional racing in 2006.
Later Life and Legacy:
- In recent years, Gobert has spoken openly about his struggles with addiction and its impact on his career.
- He became an advocate for mental health awareness and drug rehabilitation.
- Sadly, Anthony Gobert passed away on January 17, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of both exceptional talent and personal challenges.
Additional Points:
- Gobert was known for his aggressive riding style and fierce determination.
- He was a fan favorite, earning the nickname “The Go Show” for his exciting performances.
- Despite his struggles, Gobert’s achievements in his early career remain remarkable, showcasing his immense talent and potential.
