Suzuki TM400 J Cyclone 1972 Rare Early model classic scrambler

For Sale – my fully restored and rare early model Suzuki TM400. Ready to race….or put in your man cave! £4250 ovno.

I can bring it to the Llanthony classic scramble on 29th September if you buy it before then. Alternatively can help with delivery within reason.

See video of it in below link from 23′ minutes onwards. https://youtu.be/HEgSP4B1Hb0?si=F1WEP6u8a3OH2V2G History : The ’72 model Suzuki TM400 is essentially the same as the first year model, the TM400R (’71 model) differing only in colour and graphics (essentially yellow instead of orange) and the placement of the CCI oil injection tank which was moved from the lh side on the ’71 TM400 to the rh side on the ’72 TM400 a few hundred bikes into the ’72 production run. This bike is a relatively early ’72 400 : Frame number – TM400-18605 Engine number – TM400-18673 Manufactured 11/71 The original ‘71/72 model TM400’s were almost completely different from the subsequent TM400 models. Everything including the frame, motor, suspension, mudguards, and many detail items were modified/updated/changed from the ’73 model onwards. Bought as a “rolling chassis” loosely assembled requiring full restoration but surprisingly complete. As an amateur “restoration” I have turned to the professionals to have major work items completed (motor rebuild etc) and then carefully assembled the bike myself. I have been very careful to make this bike “part number correct” during assembly, sourcing only the correct NOS Suzuki parts where they were available. Work completed: Frame was already powder coated when I got the bike and still looks really good but does have some marks in places, mostly out of sight (refer to pictures). Swingarm excellent; the bushes were removed and found to be spot on so were merely cleaned and repacked with fresh grease. The grease nipple for the bushes was missing so a genuine NOS Suzuki one was acquired and installed. Motor – professional restoration – has been completely stripped and gone through. All cases etc have been powder coated satin black. All bearings and seals have been replaced with new – in both gearbox and motor. The barrel has been bored to 1st oversize with a new Wiseco piston. 90% of the gearbox is NOS. A 4Lb “genuine” aftermarket flywheel weight was installed. Has the correct engine sprocket cover with the two vent slots (later models were different) which is intact as is the lh crankcase. (both are often broken from a thrown chain). The CCI oil injection is present and working perfectly. Oil used is Belray SI7 in the injection system and Belray 80W GearSaver in the gearbox. The motor has been run through three heat cycles and a very brief spin through the gears. All the original S embossed engine mounting bolts have been preserved and zinc plated. Carburettor/Air Intake – The carburettor has been vapour blasted and rebuilt with new jets, floats, seals and gaskets. The choke mechanism lever has been zinc plated. The airbox is original, with its external cover (which is very unusual) although this has been “drilled” at some point in its history although is not visible. Exhaust – A brand new exhaust was made for me by Jemco in the USA…I commissioned this pipe because a good original OEM exhaust for the 71/72 TM400 is virtually impossible to find and the later (’73 onwards) TM400 exhausts do not fit properly (different exhaust port angle). Suspension – Forks. The chrome stanchions were hard chromed by AMPhilpot (Hard chrome). The alloy fork lowers were polished and then reassembled with NOS dust covers and new seals, NOS retaining washers and spring clips and complete NOS damper rod internals in both forks. A correct NOS Steering stem sourced in the US and was fitted as the one on the bike was wrong. The upper triple clamp was replaced with a good s/h one and polished (the one on the bike had a crack through it). Rear Shock Absorbers – Custom built/restored in the USA for me using restored parts of a stock shock and the damper from a brand new EMGO shock. Look exactly like the OEM shocks, are adjustable and the correct length for the ‘71/72 model TM400 (shorter than the ’73 onwards TM400). Wheels/Brakes – Completely rebuilt, the hubs were powder coated and rebuilt with new bearings and seals then laced up with new spokes to the original Akront rims which have been highly polished. Work done by JRS Wheels of Whitchurch. New inner tubes and Michelin Starcross tyres. Brakes – new EBC grooved shoes. All spindles, spacers, adjusters etc have been zinc plated. Bodywork – Very rare NOS mudguards of the correct shape (the 71/72 models were completely different shape/style to later TM’s) were sourced and fitted. The tank is in excellent condition and has no internal rust. A NOS fuel tap was installed. New tank graphics were sourced and applied. Seat is original and correct but is as it came with the bike. I have not painted the base. Replica number plates were sourced in the US. All detail decals were sourced from Vintage Suzuki in the US. Controls – New Renthal handlebars were fitted, using the 764 “Jimmy Button” bend/shape which is reasonably close to OEM stock bars. Renthal grips (comfortable) and Venhill levers (very close to OEM Suzuki in shape) were used. The throttle assembly is genuine original Suzuki, again an extremely rare item and unique to the 71/72 TM400. Drive train – A brand new DID Gold 525 O-ring chain is fitted with NOS Suzuki sprockets front and rear. NOS cush drive rubbers were fitted to the rear sprocket hub/carrier together with the correct NOS bolts and tab washers. A s/h chain guide was sourced (original NOS are impossible to find) again unique to the 71/72 TM’s….the later models adopted a chain tensioner.
