1978 British Army Bombardier Can Am – 250cc

1978 British Army Bombardier Can Am Mk1 motorcycle. This is one of the exceptionally rare SAS variant.

The MoD Vehicle History Card shows that it was issued to 22 Regiment SAS on 5th January 1979.

Only the first ten or twelve of the 7,000 or so Bombardiers made for the British Army were this variant, officially described as Motorcycle, SAS, 250cc Can Am. This is frame number 005, and its ERM was 23GX87.

I’ve owned the bike for a number of years. To maintain its authenticity I’ve retained all the original main components, though I rebuilt the frame with new and genuine Bombardier bearings and other parts. It’s not over-restored. It looks just as it should, as when it was issued to the Regiment in 1979.

The engine was overhauled by the previous owner. It starts first kick, and runs superbly.

It has a new wiring harness, with new old stock ignition components and light units.

The SAS variant was originally fitted with a speedway front tyre and a trials rear, though I’ve fitted trials tyres front and rear. It is fitted with the small rack over the rear wheel unique to the SAS variant.

This is a reluctant sale. But I’m getting old, and as I have a damaged and fragile ankle it’s no longer sensible to ride a motorcycle.
