BSA Bantam D7 1963
BSA Bantam 175cc D7 1963
This is MOT & Tax exempt and it is taxed to May 2026. I think it is an original ‘A’ registered bike.
I bought it as a bit of a project about a year ago. It hadn’t been used for a long time but it was complete, it turned over with good compression & it had a bit of a spark, but I don’t think it had been on the road for a good while.
After much head scratching and researching, I decided to go down the electronic ignition route with full 12 volt electrics. This involved dismantling the left hand side of the engine. Whilst there I decided I may as well check the whole engine over, replacing any worn or suspect items. I fitted new clutch plates, clutch springs & a clutch chain wheel bush (£37.89 !). The bore & piston are good with no appreciable wear. The primary chain was replaced as the original was a bit slack, I have, but I haven’t refitted the chain guard. Gearbox was checked over, all gears good, one bearing was replaced. These items plus all the odds & ends you need like tab washers, gaskets, 12 volt LED bulbs etc. new rear tyre, drive chain & a new 12 volt battery of course. I have bills for well over £500.
I have also stripped & checked the front forks, changed the fork oil & the gearbox has fresh oil of course. The front and rear brakes were checked out and are OK, they work as well as they ever did (!) and the front brake has a new cable.
It looks reasonably tidy but it is not going to win any concours competitions. The mudguards have been brush painted Hamerite silver and any paint chips on the red bits have been touched up with a slightly different colour red. As you can see from the video clip, it runs & ticks over nicely. I had a bit of an issue with a sticking carburettor needle valve and possibly a bit of a leak on the float chamber gasket whilst trying to start it. It hasn’t been used over the winter so a few teething problems are to be expected. Another issue I have had is selecting second gear whilst riding it – it selects 2nd fine whilst running on the centre stand – it maybe my big boots or not getting the right gear changing technique. The horn is a non electric one as you can see, it does the job !. The headlight main / dip switch is a bit temperamental and ideally needs replacing. The original rear light didn’t have a brake light requirement as standard – this I have changed with a later unit that looks the same & the brake light is now operated by the rear brake only.
I would like to think of it as a 95% completed project and it will ideally need some more fettling before you use it in earnest. But there are no major faults & everything works as it should and I know of no other issues other than the ones I have described above.
The winning bidder will need to collect it from the WV6 area of Wolverhampton.
The winning bidder is to pay a £250 deposit within 3 days of the auction end please, by PayPal ideally and then the rest in cash on collection. There would be no rush to collect the bike after the deposit has been received.
